Environmental Friendly Transport Policy

The University encourages the use of electric and hybrid vehicles, shared vehicle use, and efficient planning of shuttle services, while emphasizing vehicle management, safe campus design, and uniform vehicle branding to support a sustainable and safe campus environment.

Acquisition / Replacement of Departmental Vehicles

  • Prior approval from the Executive Vice-President (Administration & Finance) is required for the acquisition of new vehicles and the replacement of existing ones by departments.
  • Departments should provide sound justifications for their applications and include a suggested vehicle model.
  • As a general reference, the minimum expected lifespan for vehicles is:
    • Office/Official Cars: 7 years
    • Vans, Lorries, Midi-buses, Coaches: 10 years
  • Other factors should also be considered when requesting vehicle replacements, including:
    • Usage patterns of existing vehicles
    • Accumulated maintenance costs
    • Vehicle age
    • Mileage driven

Vehicle Branding

To achieve uniformity, any new purchase of university vehicles should comply with a recommended colour and lettering scheme.

  • The body colour should be white.
  • For private car - HKU Crest (~ 11cm x 10cm) must be displayed near the radiator cover at the front of the vehicle in between the two head lights, while two HKU Crests (~5cm x 4.5cm) to be placed near the two side doors.
  • For Light Goods Vehicle, green stripe (~ 8cm width) is to be sprayed along both sides of the car body and HKU name and department name be displayed.
